Virs Pub CS 1.6

I got banned today for typing an IP into chat. 50,000 minutes... kind of excessive don't you think.

My bad... I was only trying to help someone who said they just started playing again find some REAL servers. It's bad enough you guys have to go and spam the server list with hundreds upon hundreds of fake servers but on top of it you ban your players that try to help a noob find a real one.

We don't allow advertising. We also no longer have hundreds of redirects. I think we only have 60 right now. Down from a high of 500 at one point.

Reason we don't allow advertising is I spend a LOT of time getting players to the server. You can disagree with my method but I don't see how advertising in someone else server is any better than what I do.

I'm sorry for breaking the server rule. I thought I was doing something helpful for the poor guy who couldn't find any other servers. I'm really glad to hear you guys have downsized the amount of redirects. As nice as it is to have a full server, it really hurts the community in it's entirety. I remember not being able to figure out why I couldn't access any other server for MONTHS after starting up CS again. Some people won't stick around and play VIR's Pub only for long and they will just quit the game altogether. This is especially true since it's such an old game and people assume it has died. Anyway, just my 2 cents on that and I thank you for unbanning me and appreciate being able to play on this server.

Fair points but if I don't do it some one else will. Until Valve finally fixes it then I'm not going to stop using the redirectors simply because its morally right. I'm going to do whats best to fill the server and ensure we have lots of players. If I don't we won't have a server to play on due to everyone else redirecting. It's the system we currently have - flaws and all.

Unlike others I don't hide this fact and I understand completely how annoying it is. But at this time it's the only way to stay alive.

Currently I am banned again for some unknown reason. This time for 2600 something minutes. Sodo I don't understand why you're posting that part of chat. I came out and said right off the bat I was helping the guy find a server and never denied deliberately posting the IP despite knowing it broke the rules.

Now I'm not sure why I am currently banned this time. I was not online at the time of the ban since I don't have a screen shot of it or any recollection as to why I would be banned again.

You knew the rule and you broke it. We decided to ban you for 2 days for it. After multiple debate, the conclusion is that this is your warning and your ban is 2 days length as of today. Your next trip will not be light, considering this is the warning.

The reason why he posted the chat was to provide a proof that you've said such thing and you broke such rule, thus why we brought this to our attention. That and nothing more.

Vir unbanned you, but then we looked at the situation again and realized you've been a long term member and that this shouldnt be taken so lightly, that some kind of punishment should be added. So we decided to keep 2 days ban.

Understood, but I'm not coming back. Your idea of how to help protect the server from advertisement has driven me away. I have no desire to play on this server any longer. There really isn't anyone on to play with any more and you just lost someone who would log on and play with bots and noobs just to help get things rolling and get more people to join in. Have fun in there everyone and best of luck. Sounds bitter but really no hard feelings. I'm moreso leaving cause I feel the server has died and this just pushed me over the edge.

You do have a point and I am not disagreeing with you.

However, in our defence, our servers currently empty for multiple reasons:

1. Redirects not being run at its full capacity and reduction in redirects.
2. Altered server config / CPU usage for CS GO - Somewhat spike / lag in our 1.6 server.
3. Ddos we've been getting that we're waiting out, making our server lag.
4. STEAM server, other servers that are constantly filled are Non-Steam server with fake IDs.

On our prime hour, we do get +24 players. And also back in the days, when we had redirects running in Asia and Europe, we'd have 32 players at all times day and night.

I've been running servers for a long time. The reason people leave is they don't like the plugins. People get upset about the redirectors, but that's not the major reason they leave.

Anyway I've always helped people who have complained about the redirectors. I've never hidden the fact we have them. It's the reason we exist. I won't apologize for that.

As for other servers being full. It actually comes down to location, location, location. A good - unique location, a very low ping located in an under served city with a large population of people who like playing CS.

Unfortunately in my experience Toronto is a terrible location that doesn't fit this picture. First, there are not enough CS players in the city as most people I know seem to lean towards consoles or newer FPS games like COD.

Second we have too many server hosts located in Detroit and Chicago that we have to compete with and that saturates the market. Not enough players and too many servers.

Thirdly and MOST importantly is the IP address. Valve uses some terrible IP geolocation to decide what servers it delivers to you first. For example if you IP starts with 99 you will get only servers that start with 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 100, 101, 102 and 103. So if your IP happens to be in a block that not too many residential ISPs use (for example our 199 block) then you end up being last on the list being sent to the players. The best blocks are anything starting under 100.

Anyway all these things are completely out of most peoples control. That is why Vir's Pub uses redirectors. It allows ME to take advantage of the same things other people naturally have. I can choose an IP in a different city on a different block and redirect to mine.

The real problem is Valve. An IP should have no bearing on ANYTHING. What should be important is the quality of the server. How long have they been active. What is their uptime? How longer do players stay on the server? That's what defines a quality server. Unfortunately right now that doesn't mean anything.

Finally the reason WE are dead lately is due to a constant DDOS attack that keeps attacking the server, my home connection and a few redirector locations. I am writing software to solve this problem automatically instead of me manually blocking IPs.

If you wish to leave over this then I am sorry to see you go. It's just we don't allow advertising and you knowingly broke the rule. To me I feel this is a lack of respect towards our server that we spend a lot of time and money to run so you can enjoy yourself. I think regardless of how to accomplish our goals - we do this for free and that deserves respect for our rules.
