I'm sure you are all wondering what is going on in regards to the server. So I am going to give you an update.
First off as you can see the website is up and functioning. Should work fine - except for the Psychostats.
Second off all the parts did come in. However while I was building the system I realized the SAS hard drives will not work with the case we have as it requires SATA hard drives. While the SAS drives are quite a bit faster (they spin at 15000RPM vs 7200RPM of most SATA) it would mean buying a case twice as expensive as the one we bought now. So I purchased 3 new 250GB SATA drives and I already have one at home I am going to donate. We can still use the SAS RAID card we bought (it was $450) to run the SATA drives. This gives us a good speed boost over just using the built in motherboard RAID. The cost was around $200 which included the special SAS to SATA cable adapter. We are still ok on funds, however we do not have a full 3 months worth of funds for the service, only a month and a half now. But it is still enough.
Unknown's spare server arrived as well. This will replace our current server for our website. It is twice as powerful and has 4 times the amount of RAM. We will be able to offload the Psychostats from our CS server to the webserver, which should help improve server speed and decrease latency. I am in the process of setting this server up - which is NOT easy as it's an enterprise level server and it does not work like your typical home computer. Very complicated, lots of proprietary parts and cables to deal with. Not fun. However I am making progress and it's booting up and I am able to install Linux on it - now I just have to get the SCSI HDD's into a RAID. It's harder than it sounds.
We do not yet have the IP's for the server, however you can use either of the two following addresses:
cssrv.virspub.ca
server.virspub.ca
Once I get the actual IP address I will make sure that these two addresses point to our server. So add those to your favorites. ETA on server is still unknown. My goal is this weekend. I am doing my best to get this working ASAP. My entire room is completely taken over with server hardware and I am sleeping in the spare room as theres so much stuff everywhere!
We still could use donations in case something unexpected comes up. So if you have not yet donated please do - we will use every penny on the server.

Server going down tomorrow

Hey guys,
Server is going down tomorrow. They are shutting it down 2 days earlier than I expected. They claim its because they are closing down the site I'm located at, but I happen to know they got a one month extention on their lease so they are lying to me. They just want me gone.
Bunch of liars.
Anyway the server will go down at 6:30pm tomorrow. Website will be down as well. Not sure when things will be up but I'll fight to have the website up within a few hours. Server will be longer. Seems theres a delay in shipping the new case. It's holding us back. I emailed them and expressed my concern about the wait. Lets hope they take me seriously. I do not yet have the new IP's for the server either. It is all a bit frusterating.
Keep an eye on the website for more information.

Vir's Pub + MonctonCS Shutting Down...

Vir's Pub is being removed from the current ISP.
At this point we do not have the funds to continue. So we have two options, the community can step up and pay for a new service (unfortunately it is quite a bit more expensive) or I will be forced to shut it down for an unknown amount of time (possibly permanent).
If we wish to continue we must do two things. First we need to replace our large 4U case with a smaller 1U or 2U case. A decent quality case this size will be at least $400 (we need top of the line case. This isn't a n00b fest here. No ebay junk). This is because co-location providers charge on the amount of space you take in their rack. Having two 1U servers instead of a 4U and a 2U server will save us nearly $200 a month in service fees. We will also need a low profile fan which will be around $60. I will need to have this purchased by tomorrow or Friday as it will take a bit of time to ship.
Next we will have to pay upfront around $200 for server co-location per month. This is double what we pay now. We had a very good deal before and we no longer have that.
I did have a plan to move this server already but it was not going to materialize for another month. This just sprung this on me today which puts me in a bad spot. So we will need a temporary home at least until I can find a better deal.
So to recap - we already have a replacement for the webserver (Unknown just needs to send it!!) so we have a 1U box that will replace our larger 2U webserver. So we need a new 1U case, a low profile fan and a co-location area. Total: $650
I know it's a lot. I'm hoping I can lower it but for now assume that's the price. I can tell you theres no chance I can get that for under $400.
Also be aware this means our server IP will be changing.

Hey guys!
I am looking for people who have an old computer/laptop they would be willing to hookup to their internet, forward 15 ports and run some software. We need about 4 or 5 people to do this. I am willing to offer these people (A) level administration as long as they keep their box up and running and remotely accessable to myself and Unknown. (If the box goes down we will remove the admin - this is to insure people keep their boxes functional). If you are already an (A) level admin I'll bump you to (UA). If you are an (UA) already I'll take your offer into consideration on it's own. XA only goes to the best so I wont move you up unless I feel you deserve it. The MINIMUM specs required for this are:
Pentium 4 1.8Ghz
512MB RAM
10GB HDD
Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7
Good internet connection.
We would like to see 1GB of RAM if possible but it is not a requirement.
The box would use roughly 10kb/sec of traffic and would need to be online 24/7. We would need you to maintain it in the event we lose remote access to it - otherwise we will maintain it for you. You need to have a good router to do this as cheap routers may lock up and we do NOT want to cause trouble for you. Most routers sold in the past 4 years should work just fine. You would need to install Windows for us or have Windows already installed on it. If you have a download cap on your internet, this would use roughly 20GB of traffic a month so make sure you are ok with this.
If we can get 4 or 5 people to do this, I can promise you our server will fill up faster, fuller and for much longer. So if you are interested add me on steam (

) or reply in the forums. Remember if you don't have an extra computer yourself ask some family and friends. There are so many used computers sitting is closets it is amazing.

Server Trouble

Hey guys,
First off I want to say to everyone who has been donating - thanks! We would have been shutdown 6 months ago without you guys. The past two months we have been caught up on the donations and even had a bit of a surplus.
However just as I thought we were out ahead of all this - my host yet again is playing around with me. I am left with the impression they want me gone. They simply don't want to cater to a high level user and instead only care about your 'typical' 40 year old user who just heard about email last year. They are also being sold to another company - and I have no idea what this new companies policy will be towards co-location servers.
Because of that I am taking steps to move us else where. At this point they may shut me off tomorrow for all I know. I had a place I was hoping we could put it but that wouldnt happen until March or April. I am doing everything I can to ensure we can last until that time but at this point we need to be prepared for the worst. The worst may be a complete shutdown of Vir's Pub until April.
Please keep an eye on the website. The IP's for the server(s) may change at any time without notice. The updates will be posted here. It's even possible this website may go down - if so please use www.virs.ca instead. This is our backup domain of which I have complete control over. At this time www.virspub.ca and www.monctoncs.ca are in control of my host. Again I am working to rectify that.
We are looking at the possibility of a rental server as well to hold us off until my new connection materializes. Hoever it would cost an extra $50 over what we pay now ($100) to do so which means we may need more donations.
I will keep you updates as I go.
Thanks!

That time of the month!

Hey boys and girls,
It is that time of the month again. I know, painful, no money, life sucks. Just remember this is the LAST month we need $200. After this we will only need $100 (plus tax - $113) every month to cover the monthly charges. So please donate! The more you guys donate the more I'll work on the plugins and server to make it sable, smooth and fun. Promise!
Now as for our longterm plans. I am currently working on a project for work which calls for a 1Gb internet connection down at Front St. in Toronto. This will include an entire rack for servers and machines. If all goes as planned I hope to move our server from Duke St. in Kitchener to Toronto upgrading from a 80mb connection to a 1000mb connection.
The downside is rackspace is limited in Toronto and thus we need to move from a 4U case to a 2U case (half the height). A case can cost $70 for a cheapie one or $400 for a good one. We are planning to go for the $400 case as it includes such items as redundant fans, redundant hot swapable power supplies and other such important server items. So we are going to start saving up for the case now so we can be prepared for the summer. If we don't save up enough we will go for the cheaper case - the tradeoff being shoddy hardway which will very likely result in server issues such as lockups and hardware going bad due to heat buildup and cheap power supplies. But we will do what we need to do. The cost for the connection will be the same.
The ETA on this is Summer 2010.
